Partners Clare Burns and Andrea McEwan will take part in the Osgoode Certificate in Elder Law, a 5-part course that will be offered by Osgoode Professional Development from Wednesday, February 5 - Wednesday, March 5, 2025. Clare Burns will serve on the Advisory Board for the course.
As a professional working with the elderly, it is imperative to have a grasp on the multidisciplinary nature of elder law, along with your obligations. Over five, intensive one-day modules – spread out over 5 weeks – attendees will develop comprehensive knowledge and tools to help navigate the demanding, complex environment that is Elder Law. Attendees will gain practical skills, enjoy a forum for the understanding of fundamental issues and network with professionals and colleagues also working with elder clients.
This program goes beyond the traditional approach to the subject matter and explores the aging process to better understand the circumstances of older adults. There is emphasis on skills-based learning, with in-class lectures being supplemented with group exercises, role play simulations, case studies and peer interactions. In the third module, attendees will participate in breakout sessions, requiring live attendance.
Andrea will present the second module in the course, "Substitute Decision-Making", on Wednesday, February 12. The module will focus on valid consent, powers of attorney and substitute decision makers, determining best interests, the role of the lawyer, the role of the Public Guardian and Trustee, the Consent and Capacity Board process, and Predatory Marriages.
