WeirFoulds Partner Nadia Chiesa spoke to Canadian Lawyer about the role she played in a recent landmark constitutional challenge in Antigua and Barbuda, which successfully overturned so-called “anti buggery” laws as unconstitutional. When this decision was released by Antigua and Barbuda’s High Court of Justice last month, the island country became the first in the Eastern Caribbean to effectively decriminalize homosexuality.
Nadia, who is called to the bar in multiple countries across the Eastern Caribbean, has been working alongside ECADE (Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality) and a team of lawyers as part of a five-country challenge across the Caribbean as part of her pro bono work through WeirFoulds’ Caribbean Practice Group.
The decision, which has been “five years in the making,” is hoped to be only the first of many, with Nadia noting “[…] there are pending cases before the courts in other jurisdictions in this region.”
