Canada officially observes the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation for the first time on September 30th, honouring Indigenous children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. The day had been unofficially observed since 2013 as Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools.
