We are pleased to announce that Partner and Chair of the Private Equity Group, David S. Brown, has established the Mac Urquhart PhD Award in Economics at Queen’s University.
Established in memory of Dr. Malcolm (Mac) Urquhart LLD, this annual award is given to Doctoral students in their third year of study, who have submitted the best second-year required research paper in the field of Economics.
Dr. Malcolm (Mac) Urquhart was a leading member of the Queen’s Economics Department from 1945 to 1979, and he continued to be closely associated with the Department until his death in 2002. Dr. Urquhart has been among the most important figures in Canadian Economic History and Canadian Economics, generally. Historical Statistics of Canada (1965), of which he was primary editor, was the cornerstone of nearly all work in Canadian economic development for many years. It later provided the foundation for a second edition, produced by Statistics Canada.
The Mac Urquhart PhD Award in Economics is in keeping with Mac’s long-held belief that economic theory is the key to understanding all sorts of economic phenomena.
David S. Brown is a graduate from the Economics program at Queens’ University and had the great pleasure of being one of Dr. Urquhart’s students, an experience that he highly values. It is his hope that the establishment of this award will ensure that part of Dr. Urquhart’s passion for the subject of economics continues well into the future.
David S. Brown practises in the areas of Corporate Law, Mergers and Acquisitions and Corporate Finance. He has been named by Best Lawyers® as one of the most highly regarded lawyers in Canada in the practice area of Corporate Law. He handles all manner of M&A and Private Equity transactions with an emphasis on: private company sales and divestitures; middle-market company mergers and acquisitions; and the Canadian component of institutional fund purchases and divestitures.
We look forward to the great and inspiring things that this award will generate.
