WeirFoulds is pleased to announce that Kayla Theeuwen, Chair of the Caribbean & Offshore Practice Group and Partner in the Commercial Litigation Practice Group, has been named a 2024 Lexpert Rising Star. The award honours leading lawyers under 40 in Canada from law firms, in-house departments and other practices. The winners were announced on Tuesday, November 19th during the Lexpert Rising Stars Awards Gala at the Liberty Grand in Toronto.
Nominations for young lawyers who have made outstanding contributions in their careers were received from across Canada. Winners are voted on by an advisory panel comprised of esteemed leaders and experts in the legal profession.
Kayla has spent her entire legal career at WeirFoulds. A multi-jurisdictional litigator, Kayla is called to the Bars of Ontario, the British Virgin Islands, St Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, Jamaica, and Saint Lucia. She has appeared as lead counsel before all levels of court in Ontario, the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court and the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal. Kayla has litigated and arbitrated high-stakes domestic and offshore corporate disputes, bet-the-company cases, constitutional claims, and matters involving allegations of bribery, corruption and money laundering, often setting legal precedent.
Kayla also devotes significant time to her community. She has led fundraising campaigns for numerous local charities, including The Period Purse, Girls E-Mentorship, New Circles Community Services, and Dress for Success. She mentors students and junior lawyers within and outside the firm – she is the “go-to” for professional development advice, help, or simply to be a sounding board. At WeirFoulds, Kayla has driven engagement in and initiatives by the WeirFoulds Women Committee, and has held leadership positions within the EDI Committee.
“Kayla is quickly becoming the first name that comes to mind for clients dealing with complex commercial disputes in the Caribbean. Her recognition as a 2024 Lexpert Rising Star is proof of this,” said Denise Baker & Wayne Egan, Co-Managing Partners at WeirFoulds, in a joint statement. “We are thrilled to celebrate this achievement with Kayla and to watch as she continues to distinguish herself as a leader in her field.”
“I am honoured to be named a Lexpert Rising Star. This accolade reflects much more than my legal work – it reflects the support and collaboration I have received from my colleagues, mentors and clients, without whom none of this would be possible. I am privileged to be part of this profession and will continue to strive for excellence in all that I do,” shared Kayla.
The firm congratulates Kayla on this well-earned recognition.
