WeirFoulds is pleased to announce that Derry Millar, a partner of the firm with over 38 years of distinguished law practice, was awarded an honourary Doctor of Laws degree (LL.D.) from the Law Society of Upper Canada at the Call to the Bar ceremony in Toronto on June 15, 2012.
The LL.D. is conferred on distinguished members of the legal profession and others in recognition of their achievements related to the legal profession and advancing the cause of justice.
“Derry has been, without a doubt, a driving force in civil litigation throughout his years of practice,” said Lisa Borsook, Managing Partner, WeirFoulds LLP. “His advocacy and dedication to his work is admirable. His work as a bencher and as Treasurer of the Law Society has greatly impacted the profession, the cause of justice, and our standards of civility and professionalism. He is a brilliant and respected lawyer and most deserving of this honour.”
Millar was elected as a bencher of the Law Society in 1995 (serving four consecutive terms until 2007). He then served as Treasurer (President) from 2008 to 2010, making him the fourth partner in the history of the firm to have this honour bestowed on him.
He has a well-earned reputation as a senior counsel in a wide variety of areas of law and has dealt with complex commercial, environmental, aviation, products liability and estate cases, and class actions. He served as Lead Counsel for the Ipperwash Public Inquiry and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
We congratulate Derry on this honour and for his continuing contributions to excellence in the legal profession.
