WeirFoulds is proud to continue its long-standing support of the Sopinka Cup, Canada’s national trial advocacy competition, organized by The Advocates’ Society, and funded by the American College of Trial Lawyers. The Cup bears the name of the Honourable Justice John Sopinka, Q.C., one of the few lawyers to be appointed directly from practice to the Supreme Court of Canada.
After elimination at four regional competitions, winning teams from eight law schools, representing the various geographical areas of Canada, compete in the bilingual National Finals, hosted annually in Ottawa. The four trials are presided over by Superior Court Justices from across the country.
WeirFoulds partner John M. Buhlman is a long-time member of the Sopinka Cup Society. He is a Past President, and currently the Secretary and Treasurer.
This year, Partners Derry Millar, Greg Richards and Marie-Andrée Vermette also attended and assisted in the trial competition.
Our firm’s participation in the Sopinka Cup, and support of the competition, continue WeirFoulds’ tradition of promoting the pursuit of excellence in the legal profession.
We congratulate this year’s winners, Zachary Carter and Anita Yuk from the University of Saskatchewan and the Best Overall Advocate, Lisa Delaney from Dalhousie University.
We look forward to being a part of another exciting competition in 2018.
