WeirFoulds’ annual celebration of International Women’s Day took place at the firm’s Toronto offices this year on March 1, 2023. The firm had the privilege of welcoming the Honourable Marie-Andrée Vermette, a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario (Toronto) and a former Partner at WeirFoulds for nearly 20 years.
Justice Vermette engaged in a fireside chat with Partner Lisa Danay Wallace, Co-Chair of the WeirFoulds Women Committee, where they discussed Justice Vermette’s personal experiences related to gender equity throughout her exceptional career, steps lawyers can take in the courtroom and throughout their legal careers to uplift and support women colleagues, how to own up to mistakes, and how to effectively take or filter advice that works on an individual level.
When asked what advice she had for lawyers who wanted to more effectively support the professional development and career advancement of women in law, Justice Vermette stressed the importance of uplifting younger lawyers and making sure to give credit where it’s due, as well as being a vocal advocate of good work.
Justice Vermette also articulated the critical difference between mentorship, which focuses on providing guidance, advice, feedback and support, and sponsorship, which revolves around advocacy and career advancement strategizing, emphasizing the importance of the latter.
In the week leading up to the global observation of International Women’s Day on March 8, WeirFoulds also featured a diverse group of women clients and consultants across our LinkedIn and Twitter pages, allowing us to highlight this year’s theme, #Embrace Equity. Each of the incredible women featured is recognized as a leader in their field, and many have achieved senior positions at major public, private and Crown-corporation entities.
